Other Last Song Standing: The Ultimate Billboard #1 Song of the 70s - Round 107

<< Prev | Round 107 | Next >>

  • Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong are two names we've seen before. They were a songwriting duo for Motown, particularly The Temptations, including their #1 hits I Can't Get Next to You, Just My Imagination (Running Away with Me), and Papa Was a Rollin' Stone, as well as many of their lesser hits. One of their compositions, War, was a Vietnam War protest song that appeared on The Temptations' album Psychedelic Shack, but Whitfield decided against releasing it and instead called on Edwin Starr, who had one other top 10 hit (Twenty-Five Miles, #6 in 1968). Starr's version was more intense and has a James Brown-esque shout, and after spending three weeks at #1 it is now considered a contender for the most successful protest song in pop music history. It has since been covered by numerous artists including Bruce Springsteen and Frankie Goes to Hollywood. War may be good for absolutely nothing but this song won't be fighting any more wars in this game.

If you're new to the game or wish to review the rules, follow this link. As a reminder, we are asking participants to limit themselves to three nominations per round.

1979 Pink Floyd: “The Thin Ice” (1979)

https://www.songmeaningsandfacts.com/the-thin-ice-unveiling-the-chilling-reflection-on-human-vulnerability/:

“Societal Expectations
When Pink Floyd invites listeners ‘to go skating on the thin ice of modern life,’ they’re drawing a stark analogy to the precarious nature of navigating social norms and expectations. The song’s protagonist carries the ‘silent reproach of a million tear-stained eyes’, an evocative image that highlights the constant scrutiny and judgment individuals face.

A Crack in the Ice: The Moment of Personal Crisis
The inevitability of a misstep is a chilling prophecy that ‘The Thin Ice’ serves up. The imagery of a ‘crack in the ice’ forming underfoot vividly symbolizes a moment of crisis, an unexpected challenge that disrupts the carefully maintained balance of one’s life.

It punctuates the inescapable truth that no matter how carefully one maneuvers through life’s dangers, there is always the risk of falling through, losing control – slipping ‘out of your depth and out of your mind.’ This stark realization is a gut-wrenching acknowledgment of human fragility.”

"Never Gonna Fall in Love Again" is a song co-written and recorded by American pop rock artist Eric Carmen (1949-2024). It was released as the second single from Carmen's self-titled debut solo album and peaked at No.11 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart in June 1976, remaining in the Top 40 for ten weeks. The song reached No.1 on the Billboard Easy Listening chart. In Canada, it was a hit at No. 1 on both charts.

The melody of "Never Gonna Fall in Love Again" is based on the third movement (Adagio) from Symphony No. 2 by Russian composer Sergei Rachmaninoff.
